The decree ordered all Jews to hand over their radios so that 'they would be put to better and more appropriate use'. The instruments were to be delivered at the police stations. The date was set for 23 September, which was Yom Kippur - the highest Jewish holiday. Many Germans wanted to profit from the confiscated radios. This was another step in the isolation of Jews. In July 1940 their telephones were disconnected and only a limited number of Jewish officials were permitted to own telephones. Later the Jews were even prohibited from using public phones.
